The rights of the students

Recently I discovered, thanks to the Cacerolas y Abrazos blog, to Kristen Olson, a teacher committed to respectful education and very attentive to explaining what can harm a child a school where they are not protected by their emotional and intellectual integrity. On its page it explains what the student's rights should be.

The child, in school, should never lose the love to learn, and, in his work "Wounded by School" brings us experiences that show that children can suffer a lot if the school does not respect them as individuals and encourages their creativity and freedom .

Their rights as students They should be a priority in the education system and not resign ourselves to being lost if the system fails.

  1. All students should have the right to know the reason why they are learning something and the reason why it is important to learn it at that time and for what it may serve one day.
  2. All students have the right to be participants in the definition of what is considered important to learn.
  3. All students have the right to make mistakes and also to express that they have made mistakes in an open manner and without having to fear shame.
  4. All students have the right to have at their disposal different ways of understanding a concept, an idea, some facts or some knowledge.
  5. All students have the right to understand themselves, their thinking and their intellectual interests.
  6. All students have the right to ask and question the organization that qualifies and evaluates their learning.
  7. All students have the right to develop their creativity and also their personal ideas.
  8. All students have the right to have their creativity and personal ideas respected.

The rights of the students they should be a complement to the rights of children, which we celebrate today. It would be wonderful if they were not a utopia and all the children enjoyed them. Are these rights fulfilled in the school your children go to?
