When the heat causes pimples on the baby's skin: how to prevent sudamine or miliaria?

When the heat comes and the babies take a nap, or if we take them for a while in the stroller or something more covered than they should go, the skin reacts to excess temperature with a rash that we know as sudamina or miliaria (In Spain, the term Sudamina is more known and in America it tends to be said miliary, although it is the same).

Sudamine or miliaria is a skin reaction, a rash, which appears in babies younger than one year. It consists of an obstruction of the sweat glands that, when generated and having nowhere to go, causes small pimples that can be red or white. These rashes are found mostly in areas where there are more glands (front, face, neck, chest and back) and makes us see the child red and with a rough skin. To prevent our baby from ending up like this today we will explain what can we do to prevent sudamine or miliaria and, if it has already appeared, what can we do to solve it.

How to prevent sudamine or miliaria

As we are talking about a skin reaction to sweat production, what we have to do is prevent the child from getting hot and sweating excessively. For this we will have to be clear that the baby is not getting hot and, more than ever, it is important that we touch the neck and back to see if it is hot or even sweaty. If we have spent with clothes, we put less.

In addition, it is better that the clothes are not very tight, so that the clothes attached to the skin do not contribute to give more heat and plug the skin glands more. As for the composition, it should be made of cotton, as it absorbs the baby's sweat and, in a way, helps keep it away from the skin.

Hygiene will be important at this stage, as it helps eliminate skin debris and refresh the baby. In other times it is not so much, but it is hot it can be interesting to bathe you every day. In case this bath leaves your skin drier than usual (it is usually recommended to bathe the baby every 2-3 days) we can put some moisturizer, although if it does not happen, it is better not to put anything, because that Cream layer can give more heat too.

Obviously, for these measures to serve something (or if we want to avoid some such as daily bathing) it is important that the place where we are does not have a very high temperature. It is better that we put a fan or weak air conditioning that is not all being hot, including the baby.

How to treat Sudamine or Miliaria

When we are late, when the baby already suffers from the rash, the treatment involves doing exactly the same thing we do to prevent it: prevent heat and sweat, avoid moisture, light and cotton clothes, refreshing bath, etc., and avoid using talc or cream that can clog pores even more.

Only in case the rash is important and affects the child in some way (itching, discomfort, restlessness) the pediatrician could prescribe some corticosteroid cream to relieve the rash more quickly.
