Percentages of episiotomies in European countries

The episiotomy, as many of you will know, is the surgical cut or incision made in the perineal area of the woman that includes skin, muscle and mucosa with which it is possible to expand the birth canal in the outermost area to get the baby to leave before .

According to this definition, it is understood that the episiotomy It should be done only when it is interesting that the baby comes out as soon as possible, because something could be going wrong and not to prevent a tear.

In fact, WHO, as we have said on other occasions, has already stated that Episiotomy as a preventive technique to prevent tears is contraindicated.

However, the figures in our country are still quite high compared to the rest of Europe, showing that episiotomies continue to be done almost routinely. So you can see in what position we are compared to other countries I leave below the European figures:

These figures come from the "European Perinatal Health Report", which is a European perinatal health report prepared by Euro Peristat in 2008.

How could it be less, Spain, in this case, Valencia, leads the figures. It is true that not all European countries are there, however it is clear that we still have a long way to go until we reach the figures recommended by WHO (between 10 and 20%).
