Premature babies, those little big heroes

Today is celebrated on World Premature Day, a special date to pay tribute to all those little great heroes who have come to the world too soon and are struggling day by day to get ahead.

According to data from the Spanish Society of Neonatology, in Spain premature births increased 36% in the last 20 years, one in 13 babies is born early, placing prematurity as an important health, educational and socio-family problem.

Great advances in premature management

Thanks to the medical advances in the treatment of these babies, more and more premature extremes get ahead, those born between the 22nd and 28th week of gestation, when a full-term pregnancy is one that has 40 weeks of gestation.

In Spain important achievements and advances in the management of premature babies have been achieved, reducing mortality and the great consequences of prematurity such as cerebral palsy or those related to severe sensory deficits.

The magical effect of the Kangaroo Method

Undoubtedly, the Kangaroo Method has proven highly beneficial for premature babies. Inspired by the marsupials that are born immature and continue their growth outside the uterus, it consists of keep the baby in skin-to-skin contact, as if it were a human incubator.

This contact helps improve the regulation of vital signs (temperature, pulse, heart rate) and reduces the stress of the interventions, as well as facilitating breastfeeding, a fundamental food for the care of premature babies.

Thanks to all this, the little one adapts better to the environment and external stimuli significantly improving your clinical situation, contributing to weight gain and faster recovery.
