Choose the sex of the baby in the United States

American law allows you to choose the sex of the baby, something that has led many Spanish couples and other nationalities to travel to the United States to choose to have a child. These couples undergo preimplantation genetic diagnosis, a technique used to rule out inherited diseases, but that also reveals the sex of the embryo.

In fact, in the US about 50% of these techniques are not performed for therapeutic reasons, but to choose the sex of the future baby. There is much demand for this method, which is not cheap. About 14,000 euros can cost this technique, to which we must add travel and stay for foreign couples.

In Spain, as in other countries, there is a lot of demand for this technique, although it is prohibited as in all of Europe, and fertility clinics usually refer to these American centers.

For this topic there are opinions found. There are those who point out that the right of families to choose the sex of the baby is above other considerations, and that, at least in patients of Western origin, the preference between boys and girls is similar. Although Chinese, Indian and some Middle Eastern countries couples clearly select men, which inclines the balance.

Then we find moral considerations, and not letting nature act for many may be out of place.

It is a sensitive issue, and it is really difficult for me to position myself in this regard, and although the "a la carte babies" seems somewhat unnatural, I also understand the desire of many couples to have a baby boy or girl, either an only child (children fewer cases), the couple or a third or fourth child of a different sex than those already in existence.

In any case, I consider that the legislation, if you could choose the sex of the babyIt should be very clear regarding non-discrimination and the specific cases in which it could be carried out, since many doubts would arise (in any case, couples with fertility problems, only for large families?) only for who can pay the process? ...).
