EmbaMed, a useful application on the use of medications during pregnancy

The pregnant woman should take special care with the medications she takes, since they can affect the development of the fetus. For added security, it has just launched EmbaMed, a Useful application on the use of medications during pregnancy.

EmbaMed It is a universal application for iPhone and iPad developed by AIDIFH (Association for Research, Development and Innovation in Hospital Pharmacy) that provides information on the use of medicines during pregnancy, informing about the teratogenic category of them, that is, their ability to produce malformations in the fetus.

It includes more than 22,000 medications currently marketed in Spain and more than 2,000 active ingredients which can be consulted through a search in a simple way, either through your trademark or by the active substance. The consultation shows whether the medication sought is safe, prohibited or should be taken with caution.

For this purpose, it uses the teratogenic classification of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States, as it is the most reputed worldwide and the main application in Spain. Thus, EmbaMed classifies drugs and active ingredients into six categories:

• Category A: Medicines for safe use.

• Category B: Drugs that are generally accepted for use, but only in
absence of safer therapeutic alternatives. Consult with the doctor.

• Category C: Caution. Teratogenic drugs in animals, but they
its effect on pregnant women is unknown, or there is no experience in
Animals or pregnant women. Consult with the doctor.

• Category D: Caution. Medicines at risk for the fetus. It is necessary to value
the benefit / risk ratio of the treatment. Consult with the doctor.

• Category X: Contraindicated medications. Risk to the human fetus that exceeds
to the benefit Consult with the doctor.

• Category NOT available: Medicines without an assigned category in the absence
information about their use during pregnancy. Consult with the doctor.

EmbaMed It is a very complete application, since in addition to classifying the medications, since some of them modify their classification according to the dose, the duration of the treatment or the period of pregnancy in which they are used, all possible combinations of classification are reported.

It is undoubtedly a very useful tool for safe use of medications during pregnancy. Either way, it is important to remember that medications must be always prescribed by the doctor, take them only if it is strictly necessary and be very cautious with the dose, which should be the minimum possible.
