Catalan families will pay more for public nurseries

As if that were not enough with the one that is falling, the municipal nurseries again suffer the scissoring of the Generalitat. They have announced that public nurseries will become more expensive for Catalan families, which will go from paying 33 percent to take over 50 percent of the tuition.

Translated into numbers, the annual cost of childcare per child has been valued at 3,420 euros, not counting complementary services. Last year there were 5,400 euros (including complementary services) that were divided equally between the Generalitat, town halls and families. This course the Generalitat reduced its share to 1,300 euros and for next year will reduce it to 875 euros.

Thus, most families must provide 50 percent of the cost of tuition, while the Generalitat and the municipalities will contribute the rest in equal parts, 25 percent each. In other words, the child's nursery will cost a Catalan family 1,710 euros per year.

In short, although the Minister of Education asserts that the quality of education will not be affected by the cuts, the truth is that families end up paying more money for less quality.

If we add to the increase in annual tuition the increase in the number of children per class that is intended, public education will be as affected as the parents' pockets.
