A baby is born from a woman without ovaries thanks to an ovarian tissue transplant

Today we met in the media at child born to a woman without ovaries thanks to an ovarian tissue transplant. We told you a long time ago: a woman without ovaries had gotten pregnant, and today the happy ending of this milestone has been made public.

The 31-year-old woman without ovaries gave birth last July to a baby, named Lucas, after undergoing an ovarian tissue transplant, a pioneering operation that was carried out at the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu de Esplugues (Barcelona) .

This was explained on Wednesday by the doctors of the hospital when presenting the case of little Lucas and his mother, Mercedes, a patient who entered the center in 2001 because he had a tumor in one of the ovaries, which was removed. After detecting another tumor on the other ovary, it was also removed, although part of the ovarian tissue was frozen.

It was intended in this way preserve the fertility of cancer patients, and finally it was achieved by autotransplanting said ovarian tissue in two incisions in the uterus, near the natural place where the ovaries are located.

Ovarian activity and ovulation arrived, until pregnancy occurred thanks to a process similar to that carried out for in vitro fertilization. In the first attempt of ovarian stimulation and fertilization an embryo was obtained that the professionals transferred to the uterine cavity and at two weeks the ultrasound confirmed the woman's pregnancy.

In July 2012, at 30 weeks gestation, the woman gave birth to her son, 3.5 kilos. The baby was born by caesarean section due to a problem with the umbilical cord. The child, you can see in the pictures, is already very old with almost ten months, very healthy and happy, like his mother, who speaks of "miracle."

No doubt this news is a hope for many women who a few years ago completely lost hope of being mothers after an oncological process. The removal of ovaries does not have to irreversibly damage the female reproductive system. And congratulations to the family, who may consider increasing later.
