Precautions with button batteries

Button batteries and in general small batteries are frequent in our homes, whether in toys or remote controls, watches ... These small objects are very dangerous if ingested, so you have to take certain precautions with the button batteries.

The main thing is to try that the batteries are not within reach of children and make sure that the objects that contain them cannot be easily opened for removal.

It would be convenient, for example, for toy manufacturers to keep in mind that caps containing button cells should have an opening mechanism that requires a tool (screwdriver) or mechanism (push and turn) so that the child cannot open.

Fortunately, I believe that these mechanisms are increasingly common in toys that comply with the regulations, although there may be small batteries at risk of being ingested by children in other common objects in our homes.

The Spanish Association of Pediatrics recommends the following so that the little ones are safe from button batteries:

  • Keep out of reach of children the button batteries and the objects that contain them (remote controls and other objects carrying button batteries).
  • Check that the battery cover is properly closed and, if it is damaged or broken, ensure that it is properly closed (for example, with a strong adhesive tape).
  • Do not leave any button cell batteries, including used and recyclable, loose on any surface.
  • Do not let children play with button batteries.

Following these tips we are protecting our children from serious health problems arising from the intake of button cells, such as burns, perforations and even death in the most serious cases. Every precaution is little.
