Stop smoking during pregnancy: better late than never

One of the habits that can harm the baby the most is smoking. And although it is often said that it is better to smoke a little than the anxiety it causes not to do so, it is proven quitting smoking favors the baby, even when done in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Among other risks, women exposed to tobacco are six times more likely to have premature births and the same happens in passive and active smokers. So, during pregnancy, you have to get away from bad smoke ...

A study by the research group on Nutrition and Mental Health of the Rovira i Virgili University prepared with data from 282 healthy pregnant women has shown that women who had quit smoking during pregnancy from the first trimester have avoided the risk of active and passive smokers of having premature births or low birth weight babies.

Recall that maternal smoking influences the weight of the newborn by alterations that occur in the development of the placenta, since insufficient oxygen in the blood can occur and nutrient transport is affected. The toxic effects caused by nicotine also affect the growth of the fetus.

Despite all these risks, according to the study, in Spain between 30 and 40% of pregnant women are active smokers at the beginning of pregnancy, 40% quit the habit at the beginning, but between 13% and 25% continue smoking throughout the pregnancy.

The research has been published in the journal "Clinical Medicine" with the title "Impact of smoking, passive exposure to tobacco and quitting smoking on the health of the newborn" and concludes that quitting tobacco avoids the harmful effects before mentioned.

Smoking during pregnancy negatively affects in many ways, so it is better late than never, try to quit smoking as soon as possible in pregnancy and if you don't get it, consult your doctor so he can advise you.
