Is the clothes we buy from our kids safe? They remove a jacket with sequins for breaching the rules of small parts

Recently we have known that H&M clothing company has withdrawn from the children's section of their stores, a girl's cardigan, for breaching the Spanish regulations for small parts.

The jacket had several sequins embroidered on the front and this design, so typical of many children's clothes, has led us to wonder how many children's clothes are currently on the market in breach of these regulations.

Are we sure of the clothes we buy from our children?

If we take a look at the website of the Spanish Agency for consumption, food safety and nutrition (AECOSAN) we will be surprised to see the large number of children's garments that have been recalled for supposing a risk for the health of the little ones.

Underwear, socks, swimsuits, jackets, coats, dresses, shirts, baby rompers, costumes ... There are hundreds of children's clothing and footwear of different brands that have been recalled and banned from marketing.

Among some of the injuries that can cause these garments is it so:

  • Those caused by strangulation due to the presence of laces in the neck, free ends or longer than allowed

  • The risk of suffocation that involves the presence of buttons, sequins or any other decorative element that the child can easily detach and put in the mouth (this would be the case of the H&M jacket that we talked about at the beginning)

  • Injuries caused by ropes, ties or belts that violate the regulations

What requirements must a children's garment meet?

At this point, it does not hurt to review the requirements that children's clothing should meet To be considered safe. According to the Consumer Portal of the Community of Madrid, clothing intended to dress the little ones:

  • It should not be designed with functional or decorative cords or cords on the hood or neck area, because of the possible risk of strangulation

  • If it is a sweatpants, the laces must be secured, so that the child cannot remove them and tangle with them. For the same reason, they should not exceed a maximum length

  • The garment does not have to wear ornaments or items that can come off and become small pieces that the child could take to the mouth producing a choking

  • If the garment is for a baby and has a zipper, it should not rub against the child's neck or chin, as it could hurt him

And as for the composition, both of clothing and footwear, it must always conform to reality, being prohibited the use of inscriptions, designs or mentions that suggest a particular fiber if the product does not contain at least 85 % of that material.

Although luckily we have bodies that ensure the safety of consumers immediately alerting of any potential danger that goes on the market, I think it is worth it that, as parents, let's take a look at the closet of our children.

Is the clothing they wear safe? Have we ever stopped to see if the buttons or ornaments they wear can be easily released? And the strings and cords are properly fastened? It has certainly given me a lot to think about ...
