When the little ones give us great lessons: he gave up his Communion gifts and set aside the money for an NGO

The communion season is approaching and many families are immersed in the preparations for this religious celebration. Nowadays, it is often difficult to find people who give up celebrating a party in style, and restaurants, theme parks or farms host celebrations that sometimes seem like mini-weddings.

The expenses derived from the celebration are joined by others such as costumes, hairdressing, photographer, decoration, reminders ... and, of course, gifts. So Rubén, aware of the waste that sometimes occurs, He decided to teach a lesson in humility and generosity to the guests of his Communion, giving up their gifts and donating the money raised to an NGO.

"Thank God, I have everything necessary"

Little Rubén, nine years old and a native of the Valencian town of Pobla de Vallbona, asked his mother for help to write a letter addressed to the guests of his First Communion explaining the Reasons why I didn't want gifts.

"Thank God I have everything necessary, so I thought that if you wanted to give me a gift for this day, you can give it much more fruit, making an anonymous donation for a United Hands project in which I am collaborating" - he said in his letter.

In return I asked for an anonymous donation for a project being carried out by Manos Unidas in the city of Guwahati, in India, to improve the facilities of a foster home where 60 girls reside between the ages of four and 18.

It was he himself who chose the Manos Unidas project with which he wished to collaborate, after personally attending an NGO delegation and seeing photographs of the girls, the shelter and the work done by the volunteers.

And the guests made Rubén's dream come true, which has managed to collect more than seven thousand euros that he has donated to the NGO.

But in addition to this incredible altruistic gesture, the child He decided to give a solidarity gift to his party attendees, commissioning the detail to a Valencian company that works with people with disabilities.

When the biggest lessons are given by the little ones

According to a study prepared by the consultant KPMG for the Episcopal Conference, the communions generated in the year 2014, 589 million euros, and an average expenditure of 2,500 euros per family. But in some autonomous communities, the cost far exceeds this figure, reaching over 3,000 euros per celebration barrier.

As we said at the beginning, the gifts that the children receive and that in many cases range from expensive technological devices (including the long-awaited mobile and video game console), to jewelry or travel for everything they join tall.

That is why, in the midst of so much waste and consumerism, the gesture of Rubén or other little ones who also think of contributing with their actions to achieve a better world deserve, in my opinion, a public recognition and reflection on the part of everyone.

How do we want to raise our children? How can we instill values such as love for others, respect and generosity since they have reason? What simple and everyday actions could we do with them to involve them in building a better society?

Our little ones are hope and the future, so they, and us as parents through their education We can contribute to a world a little better, transmitting our illusion, responsibility and involvement in the society in which we move.
