The tension between Queen Letizia and Doña Sofía: Leonor's slap and respect for grandparents above all

Everyone talks about the video that has transcended through the social networks of rifirrafe between Queen Letizia and Doña Sofía For a picture with the girls. It happened last Sunday after leaving the Easter Mass in Palma de Mallorca, which the Kings traditionally attend.

The scene shows a evident tension between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law, an eternal conflict in many families, and that from what we have seen, it also seems to occur in the royal family. But, without a doubt, what attracts the most attention is Leonor's swipe, and an issue we have to talk about: respect for grandparents.

Real voltage

The tense moment was captured on video by an assistant to the Mass and posted on Twitter. We cannot hear what they say, but the images speak for themselves.

Apparently, Doña Sofía stays with the official photographer of the royal house to take a picture at the exit of the Mass with her granddaughters, Princesses Leonor and Sofia.

Upon leaving, the grandmother poses with the girls to take the snapshot and we see how Queen Letizia passes several times ahead, preventing it. Then she approaches and conceals Leonor's hair as she tells him something, and the girl immediately take your grandmother's hand away with a swipe, up to twice, what many have interpreted as disrespectful.

King Felipe approaches surprised and intervenes, while Don Juan Carlos, a few steps behind, seems not to have heard anything. The Royal House has not wanted to comment on this.

Daughters-in-law versus mother-in-law

What really happened? We do not know. All kinds of hypotheses circulate about those few seconds that the scene lasts, but nobody doubts that there is an evident tension between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law. A very common conflict in families, especially when there are children involved.

If before there was little harmony between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law, at birth the children the thing usually gets worse, especially if the grandmother meddles too much in raising children. In some cases, their interference can even put the couple's relationship in check.

Some mothers-in-law kindly advise if their advice can help, while others invade without regard: they tell you how you should raise your children, make unexpected visits or malicious comments, and those are the moments when you wish you didn't have a mother-in-law. For their part, daughters-in-law feel they have invaded their territory, and react with attitudes of contempt for their partner's mother. A conflict of egos that does not benefit any of the parties and in which the children, sadly, remain in the middle.

The solution? For the good of the family, try to maintain a cordial and respectful relationship from the start and leave the rules clear when the children arrive. Conflicts can be overcome with good communication and respecting each other's spaces.

Respect for grandparents, above the differences

What catches the attention of the scene and we cannot ignore it is The blow of Princess Leonor removing his grandmother's hand after a few words from his mother. The truth is that it is not appropriate for a girl to have such disrespectful attitude towards his grandmother.

Above the differences, parents should always instill in children the love and respect for their grandparents, who along with parents and siblings are the most significant people in their life. Never speak ill of them in front of children or show disrespectful attitudes towards their elders.

The good relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is something we should encourage, and not prevent.

Leticia may not know that children who grow up near their grandparents are happier and that spending time with them helps children avoid prejudices towards older people.

The relationship with their grandparents is very enriching for the little ones, and as parents we want the best for our children, we must do everything possible to favor that relationship and foster respect for them.
