Make-up at birth: can it be harmful?

On some occasion we have seen celebrities who have shared their photographs after having given birth, where they are shown with a radiant and wonderful appearance, maquiladas and manicure done. This issue tends to generate debate: on the one hand, those who bet on feeling beautiful at a time as important as that, and on the other who consider it superfluous and even harmful.

We have asked María José Remesal, matron of the Virgen de Valme University Hospital in Seville, about this controversial topic: Is it harmful to put on makeup to give birth?

Can I be wearing makeup at the time of delivery?

María José has been working as a midwife for years and there are many anecdotes she can tell us about births. Among them is one of the most common and is that labor contractions begin in the middle of a family celebration or dinner away from home.

"Every day makeup women come to the hospital to whom he catches their birth celebrating a wedding from a friend or relative, or at a meal away from home. And they give birth to divine! "- jokes this matron.

In Babies and more He dedicated the time between contractions to make up to be perfect at the time of giving birth "Therefore, a priori there is no risk in giving birth makeup if the occasion presents itself, although whenever possible it is advisable to come to the hospital without makeup, moisturizer or painted nails, something that in any case should be avoided if you are going to have a C-section "

Why should you avoid makeup in the operating room?

The recommendation of avoid facial makeup, moisturizer and nail polish before entering the operating room It is common in hospital protocols, and we can read it in any instruction sheet for patients who are going to have surgery. And a caesarean section is surgery.

The reason to avoid body creams is that the skin must be clean to be able to paste patches or use plates if necessary. For their part, makeup and nail polish should not be used because prevent the anesthetist from seeing the patient's skin color, something important to assess your health status.

"There is a test called" nail hair filling test "that serves to monitor the amount of blood flow that reaches the tissuess. It is done by pressing the nail bed, that is, the base of the nail, until it turns white, and the time it takes to turn pink again is counted. In cases where there is no alteration of blood flow, the pink color returns in less than two seconds "- explains María José.

"That is why it is recommended not to wear painted nails, but logically in case of emergency you will not waste time removing the enamel. The same thing happens with makeup, as it covers the natural color of the skin of the face and lips, although in case of bleeding the first thing that is affected are the distal parts, that is the hands and feet "

Therefore, in case of a scheduled C-section where you know in advance that you will go to the operating room, the doctor will inform you previously about this and other aspects to take into account, including the fast you should keep, the type of hygiene you should have, as well as the objects to avoid (jewelry, dentures, contact lenses ...).

So, makeup or not makeup?

The midwife tells us that the indication of "Do not go to makeup to childbirth" It is not widespread in all hospitals. There are centers in which this recommendation is made to the pregnant woman in the last consultations before giving birth, and others instead, in which it is not contemplated.

However, María José recommends that whenever possible let's avoid wearing makeup and painted nails, to facilitate the work of health personnel and because we really never know how our labor can end. Just kidding telling us that "If childbirth catches us makeup, let's not stress about it"

Once you have given birth, after consulting with the healthcare staff, you can put on makeup if you wish. There are women who like to look good after childbirth, and even hire the services of a stylist or hairdresser while they are in the hospital.

With that looking to feel beautiful, not only for the visits they receive, but also for photographs taken as a souvenir of the first hours with their babies. In addition, there are those who admit that makeup makes them improve their self-esteem and even helps them feel better, both physically and emotionally.

In Babies and more, more and more women hire a stylist to leave the parlor with the baby and look better

On the other side are those women for whom feeling beautiful after giving birth is not important. In addition, many even avoid the use of body creams, facials and other cosmetics so that skin-to-skin contact with their babies is as natural as possible.

Personally I think the decision of makeup or not very respectable, although I also believe that, apart from the person's tastes, the mood and physical state in which he or she is also influences. And it is not the same to feel good physically, very painful, stunned and exhausted.

To me, for example, I really like taking care of myself, putting on makeup and looking pretty before the mirror, but I recognize that it never occurred to me to do so during my hospital stay after the birth of my children. Mainly, because at that time I did not care to be more or less beautiful before others or for photographs, but also, because especially because I was so sore and tired after the caesarean section that I had little desire to remove the brush and the blush.
