A new treatment reduces the mortality caused by lymphoblastic leukemia in babies

The studies and advances made in the medical field allow to extend the life expectancy of children against the different existing diseases, in this case it has been possible to find a new treatment that significantly reduces the incidence of lymphoblastic leukemia in babies who are not yet one year old.

Childhood lymphoblastic leukemia is a disease whose main characteristic is the immaturity of the immune system, white lymphocytes or white blood cells are found in large quantities in the blood and bone marrow, this causes them to not mature and affects the rest of the body of the child in different ways. Accumulation of white blood cells in the lymphatic tissues swelling, displacement of other cells or vital blood cells for the organism, but everything depends on the type of leukemia and its incidence. The new treatment is a combination of two, the result has been obtained thanks to a study in 482 children who had this disease and who were under one year old. The new drug is called Interfan-99 and good results have been found. After three years of treatment, 58% of children suffering from the disease show full remission and 47% can be said to have a completely normal life.

Experts believe that the new treatment will replace the current standard treatment, since it does not offer as many possibilities as Interfan-99. The results of the study have been published in the prestigious electronic magazine The Lancet.
