Sofia was born four months ago in Mexico at 5 and a half months of gestation with a weight of 475 grams and the size of the palm of one hand.
Although it sounds shocking and is the first and only case of a premature baby of so low weight that survives born at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), there have been cases of babies of lower weight who fortunately have also managed to get ahead.
A few years ago it was unthinkable that a baby with these characteristics would survive, but today, thanks to advances in the care of newborns, it is possible.
The little girl was admitted 90 days in intensive care with a mechanical ventilator and has just been discharged with 2,100 kilos in good health, although it must be very controlled during the next few years. After four failed pregnancy attempts and the anguish of having gone through this experience, parents have returned home happily with their baby.

It is certainly a hopeful story, but we must not forget that there is another side of the coin much more bitter. The fundamental thing is to change habits and maximize prenatal controls to minimize the birth of premature babies.
