Catalonia has the highest number of births in the last 30 years

Some time ago we informed you that birth in Catalonia seemed to have recovered after historical lows in previous years, and today we read that this trend is confirmed.

Catalunya recorded in 2007 the highest number of births of the last 30 yearss, and this, in a context in which the birth rate shines by the low numbers, (in Spain and in the whole European continent) is to emphasize. According to the data of the Statistical Institute of Catalonia (Idescat), in 2007 there were a total of 83,716 births.

For the first time this growth is concentrated in children of foreign parents: 3 out of 10 babies in Catalonia are children of foreign parents.

The causes of this increase are varied: the arrival of immigrants, and especially women of childbearing age, the arrival at ages of maximum fertility of people born in the 70s and the increase of fertility in women of mature age.

If fertility is studied by the nationality of mothers, the rate of foreign women is 1.87, compared to 1.33 of mothers of Spanish nationality.

Statistics show that the only age groups that did not register a fertility increase last year are those between 25 and 34 years, since they decreased by 2%. While, fertility above 35 years continues to increase, and it is that women in this country do not seem willing to think that it is late for motherhood.
