Protect the baby from heat

Since the mechanism of temperature regulation is not perfectly developed in newborn babies and a few months, we have to take Be careful in hot times so that they do not suffer from excessive heat.

And although newborns can cool quickly, it is not necessary that, after a few days, we warm them up in excess if it is hot. It is common to see babies in summer with a hat, long sleeves and covered up to the feet when the others go in a swimsuit and spend heat. They also pass heat.

Babies who in summer (or in winter inside the house, with heating) are excessively warm go through heat, although they do not sweat, so it becomes difficult to perceive it. But precisely for that reason it is important that we maintain an adequate temperature, because the sweat serves to cool and they practically lack such function. We will have touch the back of their neck to see if they sweat.

It is also likely that if the baby is getting too hot, it will cry, or instead be apathetic and appear exhausted or lethargic. We will have to be attentive to immediately put it in a cool room, take off clothes, give liquids or gently fan it to cool it.

Normally you will recover your usual activity as soon as you cool. If this is not the case, you should go to the nearest medical center. And although he recovers, we must not forget to consult the pediatrician this situation, especially if it is repeated frequently, so that he can rule out other problems.

It is good to follow these tips for babies' temperature to be adequate:

  • Dressing babies preferably with natural fibers: cotton and wool facilitate the compensation of temperature variations.
  • Babies should be kept well hydrated, either with breast milk or with their bottles. On hot days they are likely to claim more food.
  • Babies should never be left in the sun; It is good to give them indirect light, and on the walks it is advisable to be protected with clothes, hat, umbrellas or photoprotector indicated for babies.
  • Also inside the house we will have to maintain an adequate temperature, cool the rooms by opening windows when the heat is less hot; keep the newborn away from hot rooms, especially if the oven is used in the kitchen or some other machinery that raises the room temperature; be in the rooms where the sun is least; use fans or other cooling mechanisms at a smooth level and that do not directly affect the small one.
  • The newborn should be kept away from air currents and wind, as they could cool the body excessively.

Definitely, the baby is very sensitive to extreme environmental situations, of heat but also of cold, since it compensates much worse than adults for temperature differences due to its larger body surface but smaller mass and sweating not yet established satisfactorily.
