My baby has snot and has trouble breathing, what to do to make her feel better?

The cold season begins and it is common for young children to clog their nose, making it harder for them to breathe, eat, and even very uncomfortable at bedtime.

Since they only breathe through their nose and still don't know how to blow themselves to expel the mucus, we have to help them so they can eat without fatigue and rest better.

Do nasal washes with physiological serum

The most advisable thing is to do frequent washing with physiological serum so that the mucus circulates. They can be done as many times as necessary and we have two presentations to choose the one that best suits our baby.

There are sprays of seawater with a nozzle that allows water to enter with a slight pressure (which does not harm the baby) or in single-dose saline for each wash. The correct way to perform a nasal wash is plugging the hole opposite to the one we are washing so that the saline solution enters completely into each nostril.

And the nasal aspirators?

Nasal aspirators are not as recommended. According to the Professional Association of Physiotherapists of the Community of Madrid, the nasal aspirator it gives many otitis problems, since when using it there is a high probability that the mucus will enter the Eustachian tube, a channel between the ear and the throat, and obstruct it. The Spanish Association of Pediatrics, meanwhile, notes that a maximum of two daily aspirations should not be exceeded.

Make steam baths

Steam baths help to make the secretions more fluid. You can make them with the hot water of the bath so that the mucus is softened and it is easier to remove it. You can also use humidifiers or vaporizers, since maintaining the environment with the necessary humidity prevents the mucous membranes from drying out.

Keep it hydrated

Drink liquids It will help the mucus flow better. Offer the bottle or breast more frequently these days to help circulate.

If the baby is more than six months old and has started with complementary feeding you can offer water or natural broths (without salt).
