Is natural childbirth folklore?

It seems that from time to time we have to be surprised by statements from prestigious gynecologists and gynecology directors of large hospitals with amazing claims. Today is about Head of the Gynecology Service of the Cabueñes Hospital, José Solís, which in an interview published by El Comercio Digital de Asturias, states that “natural childbirth is folklore. ”

The truth is that reading these things makes me angry and amazes me. The person in charge of the Gynecology Service of the Hospital de León, Celestino González, recently did it. That respect for the natural processes of childbirth remains contemptuously commented by those responsible for the services to which pregnant women attend causes me stupor.

It would be assumed that they were more informed of the scientific evidence. It may be true, as he affirms, that it is only 5% of women who request this type of care, it may be true that the economic resources allocated to “Normal childbirth care” have a negative impact on other budget items, but also It is true that childbirth is a natural process, in which science and professionals are there to monitor evolution and act if necessary, not to impose unnecessary medicalization.

In hospitals where non-interventionist protocols are applied and professionals are motivated to inform mothers about the advantages of non-medicalization, the results are excellent and more and more hospitals are joining this movement.

Sometimes it seems to me that women are attending a battle between two ways of understanding childbirth care and we are at the mercy of the actions of one or the other, that defend opposing positions, but that leave us out of the decisions about our body and how to attend the birth of our children.

I do not want to be attended by who thinks that natural childbirth is folklore, although surely in this hospital there are excellent professionals who work in a more respectful way. What do you think?
