Breastfeeding, everything you need to know (II)

Continuing with the list of resources in which to find everything what we need to know about breastfeeding I intend to expand those offered in the first part, to achieve a guide that offers all possibilities to mothers who want to breastfeed and to people who, in general, want to know more about breastfeeding.

Milk League International

The International Milk League (LLLI) is the largest NGO in the world in terms of advice and support for breastfeeding. It has been running since 1956. Its page, which has many resources in Spanish, offers answers to the usual problems of breastfeeding. It is a must for any mother who has any questions or problems.

In addition, La Leche League offers support group meetings coordinated by an adviser formed by the organization, which is a huge help for mothers.

The support groups, in which I will go into detail later, are proven to be one of the fundamental pillars for families to receive first-hand information and emotional support in breastfeeding.

Mother Kangaroo Foundation

The Kangaroo Mother Method refers to the care of premature or low birth weight children, using not only direct skin-to-skin contact of the baby with his mother and / or father, the so-called "kangaroo position" but also the component of kangaroo nutrition based on breastfeeding, exclusive when possible, and early departure from the hospital for the house in kangaroo position with strict monitoring in a Mother Kangaroo Program.

The LACMAT Foundation

LACMAT is an Argentine organization that promotes breastfeeding and offers a lot of resources. He is a member of IBFAN and it is common for him to collaborate with international organizations for the promotion of children's health.

It also supports the most prestigious mailing list on breastfeeding in Spanish, in which specialists, doctors and support group promoters share experiences and answer questions. For me it is one of the most updated sources and where I find resources to continue learning.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and Academy of Breast Feeding Medicine

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Academy of Breast Feeding Medicine offer very up-to-date English information that can be very useful for those who speak this language.

E-lactation

When breastfeeding mothers should take any medication, they often encounter fears or the direct recommendation of premature and unwanted weaning. This resource, e-lactation, is carried out by the Pediatrics Service of the Marina Alta Hospital, in Denia, in Alicante.

In my opinion it is truly essential for medical staff and for the mothers themselves, who can directly consult for each medication with its commercial name and composition, to find out if it is compatible with breastfeeding, what the risk is and if there are alternative treatments that reduce.

If the real risk of each of the medicines is assessed in many cases, it can be decided with cause knowledge, since feeding with a breast milk substitute is not exempt from increasing the possibility that the baby develops short-term ailments , medium and long term, ranging from intolerances, allergies or greater statistical prevalence, scientifically endorsed by international organizations, leukemia, diabetes, coronary heart disease, otitis, bronchiolitis, respiratory or digestive problems and many others.

The bottle is not going to cause these evils in a safe way, but if it increases the chances of these ailments, so when deciding to medicate and breastfeed or wean, you have to take all the possibilities into consideration with the advice of the best professionals .

The page also offers a list of links of great interest.

Breastfeeding guides

The agencies that we have previously cited and others publish in their pages fairly comprehensive guides on breastfeeding or on specific issues. The most complete and accessible in Spanish is published by the Breastfeeding Committee of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics and a more complete one for professionals.

Also, in the AEPED you can find a document called "Lactation Management from Pregnancy to the first year. Evidence-based clinical practice guide" that contains very interesting information.

We can also consult those made by the Government of Aragon and the Government of La Rioja. Also very good is the one carried out by La Liga de la Leche de Guatemala, which, although it is intended for advisors, can serve families a lot.

Conclusion of the second topic

With this list of resources with breastfeeding guides, pages with information on medication compatibility and the most important organizations of breastfeeding promotion I conclude this second topic in which I intend to offer everything the ones we need to know about breastfeeding. In the following article I will address the pages of support groups and individuals with valid and complete information on breastfeeding.
