Household poisoning hazards: cleaning products

We are reviewing different dangers of poisoning that may be in our homes, and having seen the importance of safe keeping medications, we move on to other elements that are not lacking in homes and also they constitute a danger of poisoning: cleaning products.

Cleaning products are usually composed of toxic substances to a greater or lesser extent, and, as in the case of medicines, they should never be available to children.

We include among these dangerous products the bleach, glass cleaner, washing machine and dishwasher detergents, fabric softeners, as well as garden products or cosmetic products, insecticides, rodenticides ...

  • Cleaning products should be stored high or in cabinets with safety locks so that children cannot access them.

  • Children should be explained that these misused products can be dangerous, especially in those we do use with them, such as hand washing soap.

  • We must be very careful with cleaning products, keeping them in their original containers, if possible with safety plug. We must never pass them to bottles of water or other drinks because our children (we ourselves are not exempt from dismissals) can be confused and poisoned.

  • Although many cleaning products are sold in containers with a safety cap, we cannot always rely on them, as children with sufficient skills could open them.

  • We have to pay attention to cleaning timeWell, if the children are present, they could take the products we use.

  • Once the cleaning is finished we have to make sure that we keep all the products back in their place.

Many times the houses are not prepared to store these products properly, and we have to get some complementary security system (special security closures ...). If not, we will always have the top of the cabinets.

In any case, following these rules we will ensure that cleaning products do not constitute a danger of poisoning in the home and be used only by adults.
