The number of abortions in Spain could be decreasing

The data about pregnancy interruptions made last year in our country have not yet been made public but the data of some autonomous communities have been published, as is the case with the Valencian Community, which could inform us about the situation of the entire country .

The Ministry of Health has recently published the report Voluntary interruption of pregnancy in the Valencian Community 2010 which shows data that was not expected, especially following the new abortion law that came into force in July last year.

I say that they did not expect the data obtained because in 2010, 10,626 pregnancy interruptions were performed in Valencia, compared to 10,916 in the previous year. The difference is very small, it is true, but what was expected was a substantial increase in the number of pregnancy interruptions and, as we see, this has not happened.

Perhaps it is very bold to say that as in the Valencian Community the number of abortions has fallen in the rest of the country the same could have happened, so in the absence of more conclusive data we should leave the news in the title we offer: the number of abortions in Spain could be decreasing (if the same happened in Spain as in the Valencian Community).

Good news?

If this were true, should we consider it good news or bad news?

Everyone who judges, but for me it is good news. In previous years the trend was upward: each year there was more than the previous one. However, this year not only has not been more, but the figures have decreased a bit (I'm still talking about the Valencian Community).

This decrease may mean that women (and men) are better informed, are more aware of the risk of pregnancy while maintaining relationships, make greater and better use of contraceptive methods and are able to decide when to have and when not to have children and All this, if true, is a social advance.

It is not that it is contrary to abortion, which I am not (although I would not do it), but terminating a pregnancy is a difficult decision to make on many occasions and doing so can lead to psychological repercussions in the short and long term. That is why the ideal is not to have to face this dilemma in which, yes or yes, a decision must be made.
