Humanization Project of Perinatal Care in Andalusia

In 2008 we commented on the objectives of this initiative aimed at the humanization of childbirth. Now, three years later we can see how little by little it is spreading through the hospitals of the region the Humanization Project of Perinatal Care in Andalusia.

The idea is to create a model of attention to the process of being more humanized, making compatible the use of technology, which guarantees the safety of the mother and the baby, with the active participation of women and their partners.

The good practices that are being established in the care of pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium are based on respecting women's decisions, such as choosing how they want to give birth, agreeing on a birth plan, informing and facilitating it the necessary means, emphasizing permanent contact with the newborn and the establishment of early breastfeeding.

In the images of the project you can see a collection of photographs on the good practices in perinatal care that are being carried out in the Andalusian centers.

Until just a few months ago, of the 35 Andalusian public maternity hospitals, only two hospitals had dilation baths (Poniente Hospital, El Ejido, Almería and Costa del Sol Hospital, Marbella, Málaga). The bathtubs help the woman to relax, favoring dilation, making contractions more bearable and facilitating the birth process.

Currently, already there are seven maternity units that have a dilation and delivery bath and midwifery teams trained to attend the birth and birth process in the water (Carlos Haya Maternal and Child Hospital, Malaga; San Cecilio University Hospital, Granada; La Inmaculada Hospital, Huércal-Overa, Almería; Infanta Margarita Hospital, Cabra, Córdoba and S. Juan de la Cruz Hospital, Úbeda, Jaén). The plan is to install them in all maternity hospitals in the region.

Of course, the Humanization Project of Perinatal Care launched in Andalusia is a great initiative that should be extended to all maternity hospitals in Spanish territory.
