Children will be the guardians of the Planet: they must learn to protect their environment. Interview with Odile Rodríguez de la Fuente

Surely you know who it was Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente: the famous Spanish naturalist made the television series El Hombre y la Tierra in the 70s, which many of us followed. His work in defense of Nature continues thanks to the Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente Foundation, created in 2004 by the Felix family, this entity also intends to safeguard and project its life, work and legacy.

At the head of the Foundation is Odile Rodríguez de la Fuente that assumes the position of general director. Felix's daughter is a career biologist and began her professional career in National Geographic Television / IUCN, later also directed the magazine "Live Agenda: science and environment in Madrid."

Today we have it in Peques y Más, and we are very happy about it, it is a pleasure for us to present it to you, and also to tell you about the Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente Foundation, as well as share your vision on what Environmental Education should be aimed at children . Peques and More.- What are the objectives of the FFRF?

Odile Rodríguez.- Our main objectives are four:

  • Spread the documentary legacy that Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente left, after years of intense and recognized work in the conservation, study and dissemination of man and his natural environment, and give continuity through projects aligned with his philosophy.

  • Identify and network actors related to science and the natural environment in our country, to weave alliances and establish spaces for reflection and consensus that give rise to multidisciplinary and multisectoral initiatives.

  • Develop communication activities that raise public awareness about the importance of restoring a constructive and sustainable relationship with the natural environment.

  • Involve society in an active participation in solutions and build a future of coexistence and balance with the natural environment.

It is vital that children learn to love what they are. If they protect their environment, they are protecting themselves and future generations. They will be the guardians of tomorrow's planet

PyM.- What was the philosophy of Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente in relation to Nature?

O.R.- He was a biophile, that is, a lover of Life. He considered that respecting our environment and other life forms would make us more balanced and happy. He gave his life to teach us to love nature and in fact changed the way the Spaniards related to nature.

PyM.- What types of activities are developed from the Foundation?

O.R.- Mainly communication activities. We edit our magazine Agenda Viva, we launch online platforms, games for children, communication campaigns, conference cycles, exhibitions, TV documentaries, training courses, etc ...

PyM.-Why do you think it is important to educate children in the care of our environment, and the planet by extension?

O.R.- Because it is vital that they learn to love what they are. If they protect their environment they are protecting themselves and future generations. They will be the guardians of tomorrow's planet.

From mid-May, the Mitierramaps platform will be launched, and a series of interactive games for children guided by a children's version of Felix and his Sibyllo wolf on our landscapes, species will be available to families who want to provide an environmental education for their children. threatened and rural world

PyM.- What are the basic pillars that should support Environmental Education?

O.R.- Love and respect for nature as well as encouraging the curiosity of children and their spirit of adventure towards the unknown

PyM.- Tell us about your activities that are aimed at children or family audiences

O.R.- Since last year we offer camps for children from 8 to 14 years. This year the camp will take place from July 1 to 10 in a beautiful place in Bejís; Castellón Our goal is to try to revive the spirit of the Montejo camps that my father set up with ADENA in the 70s.

We have also edited a board game for the whole family that we have named "The Felix Game" as well as a kukusumuxu t-shirt with a drawing of a wolf inspired by a phrase from my father.

In a couple of months it will also come to light interactive internet platform called MiTierramaps with a special section for children and games with Augmented Reality and 3D

PyM.- What kind of materials or resources can we find fathers and mothers on your site? (that can help us educate children)

O.R.- Starting in May, when the Mitierramaps platform will come out, a whole series of interactive games for children guided by a children's version of Félix and his Sibila wolf on our landscapes, endangered species and rural world will be at your disposal. You will also find several files about species and their secrets.

PyM.- Recently we have published in Peques and Más the news of the Second FFRF Camp, what acceptance did the First Edition have?

O.R.- The first edition was rather a pilot test since we hardly have time to publicize the initiative and it took place in a difficult month like August. Still, the experience was wonderful and the children who attended want to repeat this year.

Among the objectives of the Foundation that I direct is to spread the documentary legacy that Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente left and develop communication activities that raise public awareness about the importance of restoring a constructive and sustainable relationship with the natural environment

PyM.- Do you have future projects that are worth highlighting?

O.R.- Of course, but given its size I would advise anyone who wants to know more to enter our website.

PyM.- Are you proud to continue your father's work?

O.R.- Much

And so far the interview we have had with Odile Rodríguez de la Fuente, however we cannot finish without thanking him for his collaboration with Peques and Más and for bringing the need to care for and respect Nature to families. We invite you to find a way to transmit love for the natural environment that surrounds your children.
