The correct dose of Domperidone to increase breast milk production

A study has been published in the Journal of Human Lactation the effect of different doses of Domperidone to increase breast milk production.

The Domperidone It is a medication that is prescribed as a galactogogue in certain cases, such as induced breastfeeding and others in which the professional considers a pharmacological aid to milk production.

The Spanish Association of Pediatrics, on the page of the Breastfeeding Committee, recommends a dose of 20 to 30 milligrams 3 or 4 times a day complementing it, of course, with an effective extraction.

The Domperidone (Motilium) It does not cross the blood brain barrier, it has few side effects in the mother and the increase in prolactin that it causes does not reach the milk in significant amounts. It is a galactogogue that is considered safe and effective. It should only be used when posture, frenulum, grip or maternal health problems have been ruled out and it is important that its use be made with medical supervision.

In the recently published work, a study was conducted with several women likely to benefit from its use, using different Domperidone dose to analyze its effectiveness and determine the dose that can be considered optimal.

The women were given Domperidone for 4 weeks 3 times a day, to one group a dose of 10 milligrams and the other the usual dose of 20 milligrams. At 5 weeks the pattern, in the same amounts, was reduced to two doses per day, and, at 6 weeks, to one dose.

The conclusion was that the dose of 20 milligrams caused a greater production of breast milk during the first four weeks, not statistically significant, but worthy of taking into account at the clinical level. Therefore, if necessary, it seems that the dose of Domperidone As a galactogogue recommended by the Spanish Association of Pediatrics, it is still considered adequate.
