A touch of the universe for children with visual impairments to approach astronomy

A Touch of The Universe It is a non-profit project that aims to build 30 sets of tactile astronomy kits aimed at children with disabilities, and among them, especially that of vision. The kits will be distributed among educators and teachers in the underdeveloped countries of America, Asia and Africa so they can practice with them all children who can not enjoy the beauty of the sky at night in which we are accustomed to see the moon , the planets and the stars.

The kits, as explained in Microsiervos, contain

  • The hemisphere and soundtrack of the planetarium show The sky in your hands
  • A touch moon
  • A book with additional activities that can be done with the hemisphere and with the touch Moon written in Braille and normal text
  • A set of four tactile sheets from the From Earth to the Universe (FETTU) project
  • A book in Braille on the Moon, in English, The Little Moon Phase Book or in Spanish, The Little Book of the Moon phases by Noreen Grice

The project is funded in part by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) through its Office of Astronomy for Development, although it still has a pending amount that is being covered through donations. To make a contribution I recommend approaching the Astrokit page from which you can access PayPal and donate.

They also told the news, and you can see images, in the television:

I think it's very interesting work that this group of communicators and informal educators in Astronomy are doing and we must congratulate them for their goal of making astronomy reach children and young people with vision problems in underdeveloped countries.
