MOSQUITOES, WASPS AND INSECTS: REPELLENTS, ACCESSORIES AND GADGETS TO PREVENT BITES

It is unavoidable. Summer is associated with mosquito bites, but also wasps and other insects, such as spiders. And, for some strange reason, they seem to be primed with children. That implies that we should not only protect our children from the sun, but also from bugs.

Luckily there is great variety of repellents and gadgets very useful to keep all insects at a distance.

How are insect repellents?

As explained by the Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP), most repellents can be used in children. The most common contain:

DEET (N, N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide). A repellent widely used in the world population and is probably the most effective.
Protects against most arthropods, such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and flies.
It is marketed with different concentrations, although products for children must have between 10 and 30% DEET.
It is available in lotion, cream and spray. You can also spray clothes.

Picaridin / picardin. PMD (P-menthane-3,8-diol) or synthetic version of lemon eucalyptus oil.

Also widely used and effective for many types of insects and arthropods, although their protection is less durable than that of DEET.
It should not be used in children under three years.

IR 3535 or Ethyl Aminopropionate. It can be used in greater than one year in concentrations of 10% or in children over two years in concentrations of 20%.

There's also effective natural repellents of topical use and proven efficacy, although with less scientific knowledge. They are those that carry pyrethrin, citridiol and citronella. They probably need to repeat their application more frequently.

The citrodiol at high concentrations (40%), it has a biocide category, and is effective even with the tiger mosquito. Of course, although it is of natural origin should not be used in children under two years.

Those made from essential oils, As citronella, which is one of the most used, they are less effective and must be reapplied more frequently. Nor do they work against parasites such as ticks. Citronella can be used from two months.

The AEP says that electronics devices They emit high-pitched sounds and the repellent-impregnated bracelets have not proven effective, and do not recommend their use.
Nor does it work, according to the AEP, to take certain foods (garlic, vitamins ...) or herbal remedies.

Application tips

You can use a sunscreen and an insect repellent at the same time, but you must first use the sunscreen and then the repellent, since the sunscreen can have substances that attract certain insects.

They can be used from two months, although the ideal is not to use them in children under two years.

In children under two years of age, it is better to opt for a mosquito net than a repellent.

Better to avoid sunscreens with DEET for children, since having to reapply several times to protect the child from the sun, it could have an overexposure to the repellent.
The AEP recommends mosquito nets for babies at bedtime and protective nets in strollers. Mosquito nets can be treated with insecticides that kill mosquitoes.
You can spray clothes with insecticides that carry permethrin.

Avoid using spray repellents on the face and inside the house, because of the risk of inhaling them. Better put it in your hand and then apply it outside.

Wearing appropriate clothing is also a good measure to protect children from insects, when it falls in the late afternoon and when we are near a river or a lot of vegetation. The AEP recommends wearing long-sleeved and long-sleeved cotton and light-colored t-shirts. Also closed and sock shoes.
