Pictograms in Navarra for autistic children: a friendlier environment is possible

Making the orientation of autistic children easier and making them easier everyday is the purpose of this project that will distribute up to two thousand pictograms in Navarra for autistic children.

Two thousand Navarre shops and other public places such as schools, hospitals or buses have since yesterday with pictograms for autistic children to find the most friendly and understandable environment. If the aesthetics of the pictogram are familiar to us, it is because the elaboration of the 58 drawings of the initiative has corresponded to two authors of Kukuxumusu.

Pictograms are drawings that represent objects and actions in a simplified way, independent of any particular language because they do not represent words but realities. They are used by people with autism who have no verbal development (or this is minimal) to more easily understand everyday activities.

Unlike traditional pictograms, those included in this project have the imprint of their creators of Kukuxumusu, are more colorful, have more details and characters. Here you have a sample.

In Pamplona pictograms will be placed in almost 1,000 different points, such as canopies, buses, taxis and poles, along with other commercial and public spaces: hospitals, butchers, dentist, bars, soccer fields ...

The pictograms in Navarra for autistic children they are an initiative of the Navarre Autism Association (ANA) with the collaboration of Kukuxumusu and the Aragonese Portal of Augmentative and Alternative Communication ARASAAC. A similar initiative already works in Ávila, and hopefully this way of integrating children with autism extends to many other places.
