The beauty of Japanese swords: the spirit of the samurai in our time

On July 4, 2014 and coinciding with the opening of the exhibition Evangelion and the Japanese Katanas which is celebrated in the ABC Museum Thanks to the collaboration with the Japan Foundation, we have invited Tetsuya Ueno to speak at a conference about The beauty of Japanese swords.

The talk is for all audiences and Tetsuya Ueno, who is the curator of the Bizen Osafune Japanese Sword Museum, will delve into the art of the master smiths in Japan. It is a detailed explanation about the history, characteristics and aesthetics of Japanese swords. The conference will be accompanied by a demonstration of decorative engraving of katanas by the hand of Akihira Kawasaki (master swordsmith).

The katanas they are a symbol of Japanese tradition and culture and, therefore, they are known as the warrior spirit and they are considered great pieces of Japanese Art History. At present there are still master smiths who continue the production of swords and their goal is to achieve the beauty of the great ancient swords, such as Masamune's. Among them, Akihira Kawasaki stands out, which has been awarded by the Japanese Cultural Agency in 2003 and by the Ministry of Economy and Industry in the years 2010, 2011 and 2013 and being the most recognized among the active Japanese sword masters.

I don't think I can attend this talk although it has to be fascinating to know, first hand, details and news of Japanese culture. Although I don't have much to do every time I hear things from the Katanas I remember Kill bill, a film that I think that although it is not among the 55 essential films that must be seen before the age of 13, they do have fascinating scenes and moments. For example, the discovery by the protagonist of the art of Hattori Hanzo and of the sword that will serve him to fulfill his revenge.

We remember that the ABC Museum is in the Amaniel street 29 in Madrid and that the talk schedule will be at six in the afternoon. In addition the exhibition of Evangelion and the Japanese Katanas It will be held from July 4 to September 28. On the ABC Museum page they explain that Evangelion It was born as an anime, from which the manga and a series of feature films emerged, acquiring both formats worldwide success. It is his mythical characters that introduce us to the world of Japanese katanas. The Evangelion and Japanese katanas exhibition travels through contemporary swords inspired by the famous animation, but also through classical swords dating from the thirteenth to the nineteenth centuries.
