Videogames: Decalogue for a responsible and informed purchase

One of the most requested gifts by children at these parties and throughout the year, are video games, but it is not a simple task to know how to choose them, many times they may have contents not suitable for children, therefore, the Spanish Association of Distributors and Publishers of Entertainment Software (aDeSe), and the National Consumer Institute, will distribute informational brochures with 10 tips for parents to know which games are most convenient for their children.

Videogames: Decalogue for a responsible and informed purchase guide parents when renting or buying a video game and that the values of these products are the most appropriate for their children.

Here are the ten tips: * Check the age rating and the description of content in the videogames attached to the voluntary PEGI rating system. * Before buying a game for minors, find out about its content, what type of scenes it includes, what values it transmits or what its difficulty level is. * Be responsible and not give up your obligations. The age classification is merely indicative and there is a risk that the child acquires a video game not suitable for their age at the point of sale. * Clearly identify the specific product you wish to purchase.

  • Be especially careful at the point of sale when selecting a video game for minors. Make sure that the classification of the product is consistent with the age of the user.
  • Avoid buying video games 'pirates' and in the 'top blanket'.
  • Encourage the shared and common use of video games.
  • Adopt responsible and informed criteria on the correct use of game consoles and videogames: time limitation, distance before the screen, alternation with other games.
  • Try to know better the world of video games to know who the children play with. We must also try to play with them.
  • Evaluate the costs of equipment, games and options.
