Natural abortions: how much to wait for a new pregnancy

After having seen the causes and types of spontaneous abortions, we will focus on an issue that soon arises in women who have gone through this trance: how long to wait for a new pregnancy after a natural abortion.

The first thing to note is that an abortion is a loss that can generate psychological consequences of varying intensity depending on the character of the woman. And, to look for a second pregnancy, it is convenient that the loss be overcome (which does not mean forgotten).

After an abortion there is a painful feeling that causes sadness that can be mixed with anxiety, fear, nostalgia, guilt ... Although there are also women who face the loss in a less traumatic way. In any case, it is not easy to try a pregnancy if the loss has not been assimilated by an abortion.

But, apart from psychological considerations, which are important without a doubt, there is the biological or physical issue: when is the organism ready to face a new pregnancy, which will depend on the causes of the abortion.

Recovery of reproductive function after an abortion

In general, before losing a pregnancy it is recommended to wait at least two or three months until the woman's body returns to normal, the menstrual cycle is restarted (and giving time in addition to the mood recovery), although it also depends on the causes that have caused the loss and the moment of gestation in which it occurred.

After the abortion the losses of blood take place, and during that period of time the ovulation hardly resumes again. Therefore specialists recommend that you do not have sexual intercourse during bleeding, also to avoid a possible infection.

Blood losses are of variable duration, depending on the weeks of pregnancy achieved and the time in which the uterus regains its normal size.

When a curettage is carried out to extract the remains of the pregnancy because there has been an incomplete abortion or that the pregnancy did not progress properly, it should also wait for the body to recover from the changes that produced that pregnancy that has not come to term.

Remember that curettage is done to evacuate the residual tissues of the womb in case of abortion, and that it is done if the gynecologist checks through an ultrasound that there are ovular remains in the uterus. Sometimes the woman is given some pills so that the uterus contracts and ejects the contents. After curettage it is normal to spot irregularly for a few days.

The recovery of the organism usually has approximately the same duration as the postpartum time, about four to six weeks, although it is recommended to wait for about two months, when it is assumed that the ovarian function and the menstrual cycle has resumed.

For this, as we have advanced, it is recommended wait for the first menstruation, which is an indication that there has been ovulation, although there are specialists who recommend giving up two or three periods. As always, if you find yourself in this situation, it is best to consult the specialist to guide you on the most appropriate waiting time in your particular case.

Once there has been ovulation, there has been a new egg ready to be fertilized, restarting the cycle, so we assume that there will be a new period of fertility immediately.

A separate question would be whether the termination of pregnancy has occurred in a very advanced state of pregnancy, because in this case, both physical and emotional recovery need more time.

Will I have trouble getting pregnant after an abortion?

Most women who have a miscarriage manage to have healthy pregnancies later. In general, having had a spontaneous abortion is not an impediment when looking for a new pregnancy.

It does not mean that there is any abnormality in the organism, so a woman who has suffered a natural abortion has a probability of normal pregnancy, the same as a woman who has not had abortions.

However, it is considered that there may be some reproductive problem in case of three consecutive or repeated miscarriages. Then the specialist will determine the necessary tests to find out if there is a problem, what it is and the possible treatment.

But aside from those rare cases, in short, after a miscarriage you have to wait a variable time to look for a new pregnancy and at least wait after the first menstruation. With the support of the family and enough waiting for the organism to reestablish itself, the illusion will soon come again.
