Cycling during pregnancy, when is it contraindicated?

Among the most appropriate exercises for pregnancy is cycling but it is not always possible or recommended. Today we are going to talk about when it is contraindicated to ride a bike during pregnancy, to avoid unnecessary risks and opt for other physical activity.

The first thing we need to know is that, if we are already in the fifth or sixth month of pregnancy, it is not advisable to ride a bicycle because the volume of the belly begins to be considerable and this causes a lot of discomfort. But there is another compelling reason and that is we can unbalance more easily, the center of gravity changes and suffering a bike fall is easier.

In the previous months, if there is no medical contraindication for any reason or risk of abortion (in which case they usually recommend rest), the pregnant woman can cycle regularly, it is a healthy exercise that helps improve circulation, to prevent excess weight in the mother and the fetus, to feel better emotionally ...

Of course, remember the basic recommendations for the practice of exercising safely, we must be attentive to the signals of our body, do not make excessive efforts, start the exercise little by little, gradually increasing the pace and duration, wear comfortable clothes and safe (not as pretty as the cover photo, but more practical), stay well hydrated ...

If you are used to cycling but have already reached the fifth or sixth month of pregnancy, an interesting option is the exercise bike, taking into account certain recommendations. For example, that the temperature is adequate and we will not overheat, since the "breeze" that refreshes us when riding a bike outdoors, disappears in an enclosed space.

Between the advantages of the exercise bike They find that we can regulate the level of resistance we want, as well as the level of difficulty, without facing potholes or slopes that hinder our walk or make it more dangerous. We can also go to the bathroom whenever we want.

But there are other reasons that could make riding a bike (static or for a walk) during pregnancy an undesirable activity, if it is your case. For example, if you have circulation problems in your hands (such as carpal tunnel syndrome) or if you suffer from hemorrhoids. Let's see

  • Bicycle numbness. Due to the forced position for a long time on the handlebars, the hands may become numb, since a nervous understanding occurs. The result is a tingling sensation or pain, which is avoided with a correct position of the back and not squeezing the handlebars (which is easier on an exercise bike). Luckily, the problems of fluid retention and carpal tunnel syndrome usually reach the end of pregnancy, so it is likely that during the first months we do not encounter this problem.

  • Aggravation of hemorrhoid pain. The fact of cycling in itself does not cause hemorrhoids, but if you have this discomfort during pregnancy, the saddle is not a good friend, since the pain can intensify. As we support the area of the perineum and anus, the friction worsens hemorrhoids and, where appropriate, varicose veins of the vulva.

In short, these are the cases in which it is contraindicated to go cycling during pregnancy. Consult your gynecologist if you have any questions or discomfort when riding a bike and choose another exercise to keep fit during this stage, since it is essential that we are active.
