Giving gifts to teachers again divides parents

The end of the school year is approaching and apart from the conversations about what to do with the children all summer, there is another one that covers the conversations in the schoolyards and WhatsApp groups: Give or not give gifts to teachers and of course, divide the parents again.

An ancient tradition

Giving gifts to teachers is not something that has emerged in our day but is already from the past. Already in the time of our parents it was common to give them gifts, especially in rural areas where the figure of the teacher was highly respected and valued.

In my time, at least in the area where I lived, it was not a common practice. I guess our parents thought that a good gift was already losing sight of us during the rest of the summer.

An obligation or thank you detail

The controversy comes because there are many parents who are obliged to do so, so as not to break the "group discipline", to give a gift to those who do not see meaning. It is supposed that it is your job to educate, take care of our children, and by that same rule we should give a gift to the butcher for serving us steaks, to the bus driver for taking our children and us, etc.

On the other hand, there are those who consider it a precious detail so that they have a memory forever of our children. It is not a gift of thanks, but a memory that will last a lifetime.

Schools that are prohibited by internal regulations

There are schools that have banned teachers from accepting gifts. They affirm that in the education of the children all the personnel of the center take part and not only the main professors, also the monitors, those in charge of the dining room, etc. Also that a teacher is given a gift and another is given something different or not given anything can lead to misinterpretations and comparative grievances. (It seems incredible that we are among adults)

Pages that make gift offers these days

Of course, there are those who quickly see the business opportunity in this new custom and have specialized in this type of gifts or take offers at this time of year.

Kolecta.com is an online platform whose objective is to facilitate the creation of cooperative boats, useful among other things to make group gifts. On the occasion of these dates they have taken a selection of gifts to give to teachers who may be able to help you when choosing what you want to give.

What is your opinion?
