We take a look at the labeling of Nutribén products for 4 months (II)

UPGRADE (07/12/2016): The information contained in this entry has been updated based on the new formulation and ingredients of the products.

We continue today with the analysis of the ingredients at the level of Labeling of Nutribén products intended for babies 4 months or older.

As we said in the previous post, the objective is simply to make a virtual wrist turn to the products to observe its ingredients and explain what each potite contains and what we consider should be improved if we consider that they are products intended for babies of such only 4 months

Potito of beginning varied fruits

The ingredients of this potito are the following: “96% fruits (banana, apple, peach and orange juice), Corn starch, Rice, Vitamin C”.

The fact that it carries several fruits and ingredients at the same time makes this potito (and all those that carry several foods), are not recommended at the beginning, that is, as the first food to be tested, since in case of allergy we will not know what ingredient is the cause.

Once all foods are tolerated (because they have been offered separately and we are sure of their tolerance), this type of potitos can be given with several ingredients, although it is always better if we do it at home with a thicker texture, less fine, so that the baby gradually learns to chew.

Starter apple, orange and banana with cookies

The ingredients are: “Apple 50%, Banana 17%, Orange juice 9%, Cooking water, Rice flour, Corn starch, 1% gluten-free cookies (corn starch, sugar, rice flour, maltodextrin, vegetable fat (palm) , bicalcium phosphate, soy lecithin, vanillin and vitamin C), Vitamin C ”.

In this potito the fruit is united with the cookies, just as many mothers do to mask the taste of the fruit and that it is more accepted by the babies and this is, precisely, one of the reasons why I would not recommend this potito.

Fruit generally has fewer calories and nutrients than milk, and for this reason alone, a four-month-old baby should preferably drink milk and not fruit. One of the biggest benefits of the fruit is that when it is freshly peeled and cut, it contains fiber and vitamins (which when it passes a while they disappear).

If the fruit is in a potito, some of those benefits are lost and, if we also mask the flavor with cookies or cereals, the fruit will have a flavor that does not belong to it and who knows if when it is able to choose food it will tell us “mom give me cookies, not fruit. ” Come on, the ideal is that you give fruit on one side, so that you know the taste of the fruit, and if you want cookies on the other hand, that taste will rarely dislike you.

The important thing is not that you eat fruit in the baby stage and with the cookie we get it (in plan "I did not want the fruit, but luckily that with the cookie you eat it"), but that get used to the taste of the fruit little by little and eat it all your life.

In any case, in your discharge, I must say that it only takes 1% cookie and I doubt that it is enough to modify the flavor a lot.

Golden apple starter pot

The ingredients are: "Apple 94%, Corn Starch, Rice and Vitamin C".

As you can see it is one of the most basic potitos: does not carry sugar and incorporates cornmeal and rice, I imagine to thicken a bit and refine the flavor. In my view, it is one of the most recommended of those seen so far, because it is one fruit.

It may seem little to mothers, but in reality the ideal is to give fruits separately. It is the way to know the isolated flavors, to get used to them and then, when growing, only change the texture. If we give a lot of fruits at once, the taste is impossible to reproduce again with the fruit in hand.

Starter dessert pot of 6 fruits with cereals ”

The ingredients of this potito are: “Fruits 96% (apple, banana, peach, orange juice, apricot and pear), Cereals 4% (corn and rice), Vitamin C”.

If the previous pot stood out for its simplicity, it brings together several flavors and food in a single jar.

Starter pot multifrutas

Potito ingredients are: “96% fruits (apple, banana, pear and orange juice), Corn starch, Rice, Vitamin C”.

It is similar to the previous potito, although without the denomination "with cereals", despite bringing rice and cornmeal.

Starter fruit salad Macedonia

Ingredients: “96% fruits (banana, apple, tangerine juice, orange juice and pear), Corn starch, Rice, Vitamin C”.

It is the same potito that multifrutas, but with tangerine juice.

Potito starter vegetables

The ingredients of this potito are: "Green beans 52%, Cooking water, Potatoes 14%, Maltodextrin 10%, Rice 3%, Corn starch, Vitamin C".

We all agree that the vegetable is healthy, very healthy, however babies are in no hurry to start taking it, especially if we consider that breast milk (and failing that artificial) It is more nutritionally complete.

Nutribén juices

Nutribén also offers, like other brands, juices for babies.

They are presented in 130 ml pots to which the nipple is adapted so that the baby can take it with the bottle. If you have a baby between 4 and 6 months It is possible that the pediatrician has ever told you that juice, babies, cannot be given in a bottle, because it has a high cariogenic potential (to produce tooth decay) since when the juice is given with a bottle, too much time is left in contact with the gums and teeth.

On the other hand, as we have said on other occasions, the recommendation for children up to six years is to take a maximum of 120-180 ml of daily juice, since it can favor obesity.

In this case, Nutribén juices do not contain added sugars, but it is not even necessary. Although Nutribén says that thanks to not adding sugar, bottle decay is avoided, the juice in the photo, from Grape and Carrot, contains 12.1 grams of sugar from the 13 grams of hydrates it incorporates.

If a baby takes it more as food than as a drink, it is not very nutritious. If you take it as a drink, replace the milk, and later replace the water; And this is not only not recommended, but it can help the baby gain more weight than necessary.

Another of the factors that help to reject complementary feeding with a bottle is the issue of learning. As we have commented several times, one of the main objectives of offering complementary foods, if not the main objective, is to cause learning in babies.

A spoon generates learning, a food on the table that can touch generates learning, but a liquid food is more of the same. The taste is new, it is true, but the fruit can be given in pieces and even crushed. So at least we will use the spoon or your own hands.

The juices that Nutribén offers are: Grape and carrot juice, apple juice, 3 fruit juice (grape, orange and pear) and varied fruit juice (grape, apricot, orange and pear).

With this the review of Nutribén products intended for babies from “from 4 months”.
