An adolescent with autism creates an application to help people suffering from an autism spectrum disorder

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of developmental disorders that begin in childhood and last a lifetime. These disorders affect the behavior and learning of those who suffer from it, as well as their socialization with other people.

Because many of the people with autism have some difficulty communicating with others and managing their emotions, a young man with autism developed an application with the purpose of helping people suffering from an autism spectrum disorder, or also, some mental health problem.

Aumi is the name of the application developed by Ethan Shallcross, an 18-year-old who suffers from autism and is originally from England, and whose purpose is to help people with autism in their day-to-day activities and emotions.

The application, which contains four different sections, including a record of your emotional health and an activity planner, would help people with an autism spectrum disorder or other mental health disorders, to manage your emotions, in order to know each other better and help reduce extreme wear and tear (known in English as burnout and an issue that we have talked about on previous occasions, but focused on raising children.)

"The application was created with people with autism spectrum disorder in mind, and this has influenced the design and functionality of the entire app. However, it is not only for people within the autistic spectrum. People who suffer from high anxiety, feel frequently tired or have difficulties with their mental health, may also find it useful.", he comments in an interview with Forbes.

Another interesting aspect of the app is that it has a section for the user to create a profile with the specific needs of each one, this in order to can show it to other people when they have difficulty communicating or expressing what they feel or need. Also, it has a section in which you can write down an emergency contact, to which you can send an automatic text or make a call.

Unlike other applications, Aumi manages a silent notification system and whose frequency each user can adapt to how it works best, as the idea is to be useful but without being too invasive or annoying, and that each user uses it according to their needs.

At the moment the application, which has a cost of approximately 3 euros, is only available for iOS devices and in English, but it has been very well received in the United Kingdom, so perhaps in the future it may be available in other languages, and thus help more people with autism.
