Positive parenting would help reduce ADHD symptoms in children, according to a recent study

About five percent of children have ADHD, a disorder caused by a disruption of the normal development process of some areas of the brain responsible for regulating our self-control. When these areas do not work properly, problems related to studies, behavior and social relationships may occur.

Sport is recommended as an effective measure to improve behavior and promote the self-control of children with ADHD. But a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Montreal has determined that the symptoms would also improve with positive parenting, based on support, a stable and safe family environment, autonomy through structured tasks and, of course, love.

What has the study consisted of

The psychologists Charlie Rioux, of the University of Montreal, and Julie Murray, of the UdeM School of Psychoeducation, have been in charge of carrying out this study published recently in the online section "Development and Psychopathology" of the University of Cambridge .

This study has had the participation of 195 mothers in the area of Montreal (Canada), which over several years have been responding to the questionnaires of researchers, related to the raising of their children from five months to seven years old.

The objective of the study was to determine whether the symptoms of ADHD that children presented at the age of seven could be reduced with the practice of positive parenting. In Babies and more The mother's diet in pregnancy is related to the risk of developing ADHD in childhood, according to a study

The analysis of the results collected have indicated that positive parenting, assessed when the child is four years old, is strongly associated with lower symptoms of ADHD at age seven. This association is even stronger when the child is able to have a better behavior and self-control when he reaches the age of six.

According to Rioux and Murray, the relationship between "positive parenting" and "self-control" could be explained by the fact that Children with better control can pay more attention to their parents' actions and, as a result, they are more influenced by their positive comments. On the contrary, children with weaker inhibitory control and educated with less positive parenting practices showed more pronounced ADHD symptoms.

The importance of positive parenting

We have already spoken on several occasions of the importance of positive parenting in the education of children, so this study would come to join the long list of benefits for children to be educated in love, secure attachment, firm and respectful limits and autonomy, banishing both authoritarian and hyperprotective models, which can harm the child so much.

In Babies and more, helicopter or lawn mower parents? The way you educate your children can affect them more than you think

It is well known that the first years of the child's life will be the basis for their social and emotional development in the future, so it is extremely important to ensure that we are giving them the necessary tools to grow happily.

Although there are parents who believe that this is a difficult form of parenting, the researchers in this study encourage families to seek help from psychoeduchers, psychologists or reference books, in order to improve skills continuously and thus benefit from the positive aspects of this educational model in childhood.
